Saturn experimented with making these out of plastic, it was a huge failure. Symptoms include hard starting, rough idle, temperature gauge not working, awful fuel economy, poor performance, and stumbling, among many other things. This sensor has at least something to do with almost everything the computer does. When they fail coolant tends to leak through the sensor and damage the connector as well. If there is any sign of corrosion on the connector it needs to be replaced.
Without getting into too much detail, the basic requirement is the diameter of the electrode should be roughly the width of the ground. Most copper plugs fit this description. Narrow fine wire electrodes almost always cause problems, usually a p and running like the car needs new plugs. IAC valves rarely fail on these cars. They usually fail when the engine is hot. The aftermarket replacements seem to work.
The symptom is sporadic or consistently high idle, p, p, or p Spray carb cleaner around the intake, specifically the 1 runner, if idle changes, problem is verified. There will be a fairly slow but significant leak around where the coolant hose runs into the manifold near cylinder 4.
OE junkyard replacements from a gen-1 or gen-2 car are your best bet. There will be melted plastic around the fuse. The radio, chime module, dome light, 12v socket, and fuel pump are on this circuit. You will probably know about it when the fuel pump stops working.

I was removing extra wiring from the original wiring harness and unfortunately I cut out some wires that go from the instrument panel fuse block to a 24 pin plug from the 24 pin plug which connects to all the wiring that goes to the interior and the rear of the car.

I had a mechanic friend listen and he thought it was the tensioner.
He was right, but it took me a dozen hours over a period of a couple months to solve the problem. Ultimately, I had to do a little back-yard engineering. I was travelling about miles for a weekend trip. On the way I ran over a bungee cord with metal hooks. That cord flipped up into the engine compartment and caught the serpentine belt, which shredded apart but did not break completely. I pulled over and inspected the damage, then I made a couple calls to confirm that it was not attached to anything that would damage my engine.
Finally, I continued the 60 miles I needed to cover to the next small town.
A few weeks later, my battery light came on. My Alternator had gone bad. I replaced it with a rebuilt alternator from AutoZone. Because my belt was only a few weeks old, I did not replace the belt.
Shortly after replacing the alternator I heard a loud noise in the engine compartment. Because the alternator was just replaced, I thought it must be bad. I took it back to AutoZone and got a replacement and installed that. The noise was gone. A few weeks later the car started making the same loud tapping noise again, especially in reverse.
The problem went away for a couple more weeks but returned after that. Next, I replaced the Idler Pulley, but that didn't make any difference.
2001 Saturn SL2 Serpentine Belt Tensioner Problems
I also tried another serpentine belt, this time a Goodyear brand. I was stumped for a few weeks. During that time I did research on the web, pulled and tested the parts touching the serpentine belt, and wondered what the problem could be. Early on I verified that the noise I could hear was definitely something attached to the serpentine belt. To do so, I removed the serpentine belt and started the vehicle.
If you try this yourself, do some serious research first. On some cars this can actually damage the engine. With the serpentine belt removed, the car made no noise. So, I was sure it was something touching that belt. My understanding is that the tensioner should be about half way through it's range of motion to be effective.
On my tensioner the full range of motion is about two inches. With the belt on, I used a Sharpie to draw a line across both halves of the tensioner. Then I removed the belt and watched to see how far the tensioner moved.
It should have moved much farther. Now that I know the tensioner is not moving far enough, I'm ready to think about how to solve that problem.
Ultimately, I don't know which part has actually caused the problem. It could be the pulley on the alternator, the tensioner pulley, the idler pulley, or even the water pump which I had also replaced at some point. Here are my options as I see them. The first thing I did was draw a diagram of all the pulleys.Check the "Possible Causes" listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector's pins.

This is not the easiest method for replacing a clutch but it does allow you to do it with the engine in the car and without a needing an alignment afterwards. Previous to this the most complicated things I had done were brake pads and rotors, valve cover gasket, and a radiator.
On a scale of one to ten with an oil change being a one, pads and rotors being a three I would rate this a seven. If you have access to a lift use it, otherwise plan on spending a large amount of time lying down on your back under the car. This procedure will be slightly easier if you do not have AC installed. Most of the photos are from a SC2, your vehicle may be slightly different.
I have purposely not included any torque specifications in this document, this will hopefully force you to buy a Haynes or Chiltons manual. Much easier if you have a hoist to run the car up and down. The engine will need to be supported, either by an engine support from the top or something from below that will not be in the way or get knocked over and drop the engine on you.
From the top is likely the best. If you support it from the bottom, a wood block under the oilpan works. As you remove hardware, lay it down on a clean surface in a line in the sequence it was removed. This will help prevent missing something during reassembly. Make note of your car stereo preset stations. This may sound stupid but the next step is to disconnect the battery so unless your radio has a battery backup you will end loosing all of your preset stations.
Remove strut tower brace if installed. Be sure to replace the strut tower mounting nuts. If you have never removed the battery tray there is one bolt that is accessed from the drivers side wheel well. If you do, a little super glue and JB Weld will make it right. Disconnect the reverse switch connector from the top of the shifter tower, the speed sensor connector from the transmission and the coolant temperature sensor connector from the engine.
Disconnect the shifter cables from the shifter tower and remove them from the transmission bell housing. The cables are attached to the shifter tower by small clips that should just slide off. To disconnect them from the bell housing just pull back slightly and then lift through the slot.
There is an excellent diagram in the Saturn FSM if you have one. Disconnect the spark plug wires.
